At Water Street, we believe children “should write because they love the shape of stories and sentences and the creation of different words on a page.”  We feel strongly that “writing comes from reading, and that reading is the finest teacher of how to write.” (Annie Proulx)

We teach English in a way that teaching and learning activities enthuse, engage and motivate all children to learn and their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning is nurtured as they develop an ability to listen, speak, read and write.  Children at Water Street develop an understanding of spoken and written language and how it is structured and receive opportunities to read and write creatively for a range of purposes.

It is our aim that all children leave Year 6…

  1. reading and writing with confidence, fluency and understanding, using a range of independent strategies to take responsibility for their own learning including self-monitoring and correcting their own errors
  2. with a love of reading and a desire to read for pleasure and information
  3. having acquired a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar, spelling and punctuation and a knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  4. understanding a range of text types, media types and genres
  5. writing clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  6. having a suitable technical vocabulary to articulate their responses in a range of formal and informal situations, including making formal presentations and participating in debate.
