At Water Street Primary School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), is at the heart of our school ethos and underpins everything we do.

We believe that high-quality PSHE education enables children to become healthy, safe, independent and responsible members of society who demonstrate respect, tolerance and empathy towards others. Through PSHE, pupils develop an understanding of their personal and social growth while exploring many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up in today's world.

We provide opportunities for children to learn about their rights and responsibilities, helping them to understand what it means to be an active and valued member of an increasingly diverse and ever-changing society. Pupils are encouraged to develop their self-esteem and confidence through making positive contributions to school life and the wider community.

PSHE also plays an important role within school assemblies, where children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.

At Water Street Primary School, PSHE and RSE are taught through regularly timetabled lessons delivered by familiar members of school staff. Assemblies, themed days, educational visits and visitors are used to enhance and enrich learning, they do not replace planned curriculum lessons.

Every class, from EYFS to Year 6, receives a weekly PSHE lesson based on the Coram SCARF scheme of work. SCARF provides a spiral curriculum that ensures key concepts are revisited and developed progressively at an age-appropriate level, enabling pupils to build upon previous learning and deepen their understanding over time. Additional lessons have been incorporated to strengthen pupils' understanding of contextual safeguarding issues that are particularly relevant to our local context.

The SCARF programme is organised into six half-termly units:

**Me and My Relationships**

Children learn about feelings and emotions, develop strategies to manage conflict, identify the important people in their lives, and understand the characteristics of positive and healthy relationships.

**Valuing Difference**

This topic promotes respect, inclusion and British Values. Children learn to celebrate diversity, recognise and challenge bullying (including online bullying), respect the rights of others, and understand how they can support someone as an upstander.

**Keeping Myself Safe**

Children learn about personal safety in a range of situations. This includes identifying trusted adults, knowing how to respond to worries or concerns, staying safe online, and understanding appropriate and inappropriate touch. Due to our school's location, there is additional focus on water, road and rail safety.

**Rights and Respect**

Children learn about caring for the environment, understanding their rights and responsibilities, and developing an awareness of money and the wider economy as they grow.

**Being My Best**

Children focus on physical and mental wellbeing, building resilience, developing a growth mindset, setting personal goals, and learning how to achieve them.

*Growing and Changing**

Children learn about physical and emotional changes in an age-appropriate way, including puberty and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). They are taught the correct anatomical names for body parts and develop an understanding of how their bodies change as they grow.

We are proud of the high-quality PSHE and RSE education delivered at Water Street Primary School. Its impact is reflected in the well-rounded, confident, tolerant and independent young people who leave us at the end of Year 6, fully prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond primary school.
